Harvest progressing in the County of Grande Prairie

Ten to 25 per cent of the harvest is done in the County of Grande Prairie.

Ag. Fieldman Sonja Raven says rain earlier this week interrupted harvest work.

“The rain that we had delayed things for a little bit, but the next 10 days are supposed to be pretty good. I anticipate we’re going to have a lot of work done in the next 10 days.”

Raven says some farmers have finished combining peas and some have started on their barley crops. Some of the wheat is still green. A lot of the canola has been swathed.

She adds yields have been variable.

“It’s still early. It’s kind of hard to tell. One of the fellas was telling me that his barley didn’t yield much at all and it was pretty tough when he was harvesting it. I think it’s a little early to make a lot of projections. Some of the crops looked really good and some of them didn’t look that great.”

Raven is predicting an average crop for most areas, with some areas having above average ones.

She adds the yield and quality for this year’s hay crop have been pretty good.

“We’re certainly not in a hay shortage. I think prices will be pretty much steady from last year and we’ll have some good quality feed.”

Raven says farmers are anticipating having their harvest done this fall, rather than having crops stay out all winter again.
