A man from Horse Lake is facing charges relating to drug trafficking following an investigation by the Beaverlodge RCMP.

In late August, Beaverlodge RCMP received several reports from concerned community members of drug use, trafficking, overdoses and drug-related property crimes occurring in Horse Lake.

Mounties, with the assistance of the Beaverlodge County Enhanced Unit and the Western Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit (WAD RCU), began investigating these reports.

On September 7, the RCMP, with the assistance of the WAD RCU, Beaverlodge Enhanced Unit and RCMP Police Dog Service, executed search warrants on two residents in Horse Lake. During the searches, officers discovered and seized a large quantity of cash, fentanyl, methadone, GHB/rohypnol, a rifle, a crossbow, and tools.

Darcy Julian Wanihandi, a 31 year-old man from Horse Lake, has been charged with:

  • Two counts of possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking
  • Three counts of possession of weapon contrary to order
  • One county of possession of stolen Property under $5,000

Wanihandi was released on bail following a judicial hearing, and is scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on September 30.
