Candlelight vigil for Shae-lynn McAllister goes Sunday

Oct 2, 2020 | 12:20 PM

Shae-lynn McAllister has been missing for 15 months, and this Sunday there will be a candlelight vigil to bring awareness to her case.

McAllister was reported missing in Fairview on July 3, 2019, and despite the RCMP putting out calls for information on her whereabouts, and a ground search conducted in October of last year, her location remains unknown.

Shae-lynn’s cousin, Carol-Anne Ferguson is helping organize the vigil, and she says they’re asking people who want to share stories to do so.

“Anyone who wants to come out and say a little bit about Shae-lynn, and what they felt (about) what kind of person they thought she was,” says Ferguson. “It’s bringing this person to life so we don’t forget about them.”

Ferguson says she also lost a sister, who has been missing since in 1998, and she will speak about her as well, and encourages other’s who have similarly lost loved ones to share their stories at the vigil.

The socially-distanced candlelight vigil will go at Hemstock Park in Fairview on Sunday, October 4 at 7 p.m., and will open with a prayer from Bruce McAllister in the Dene language. Along with speeches, there will be a sacred fire, and there will be tobacco ties on hand, which Ferguson says will be used as offerings to the Creator for positive outcomes.

Attendees are encouraged to wear red, in honour of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

Ferguson also asks that anyone with information on Shae-lynn’s whereabouts report it to the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
