Speed indicators added in select school zones in Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie has added new speed indicators in some school zones to encourage safety for drivers while in the areas.

Early last week, the speed indicators began to pop up around several schools in the city.

The purpose of the new signs is to alert drivers of their speed as they enter a school zone.

Sgt. Ross Gear with Enforcement Services in Grande Prairie says he loves this new addition to the city.

“This was a project from our good friends at Traffic Engineering and they were able to get a hold of some of these speed indicators. I think they are a very good idea, its another step in our education piece.

“It warns motorists when they are coming into a zone and what speed they are going. For drivers that may be unfamiliar with Grande Prairie it certainly alerts them that they are coming into a school zone.”

Grande Prairie City Council says that the city recently purchased more pedestrian-activated crosswalk beacons and some more of these signs.

Gear says they will continue to experiment with them.

“It’s my understanding that this equipment will be moved throughout the city during the year, and its just one more good tool to educate people about school zones and safety.”

The new indicators were in place shortly before Enforcement Services announced their Bylaw Enforcement Education Program (BEEP) initiatives for the month of October, which focuses on pedestrian safety
