Provincial government announces new natural gas strategy

Oct 6, 2020 | 6:16 PM

The province has unveiled a new strategy it thinks will boost the natural gas industry.

The plan has goals of exporting hydrogen and hydrogen products across Canada and around the world by 2040.

The government also wants Alberta to become a top 10 producer of petrochemicals, have two new LNG projects going by 2030, get Alberta to become what it calls a “centre of excellence” for plastics recycling by 2030 and getting more natural gas to the oilsands and for use in power generating facilities that are converting to its use.

Premier Jason Kenney says this plan would help “massively reduce” emissions of greenhouse gases.

“There is no greater thing that Canada could do to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions than to get our LNG to countries like China and India.”

He also called on the federal government to help out.

“We really need the Government of Canada to play ball with us in creating jobs, in bringing in investment and improving the environment, the trifecta of a natural gas strategy.”

Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity Dale Nally says the government has been watching the hydrogen market for some time.

“Whether it is used for transportation, heating, or other uses, the potential for hydrogen as (an) affordable, zero-emission energy source is outstanding.”

Kenney says the government collected $10 billion in revenues from natural gas in 2005. This year, that number is around $300 million.
