Small Business Week about resilience and innovation this year

Oct 15, 2020 | 6:30 AM

Forging the way forward is the theme for Small Business Week this year.

It will run October 18 to 24.

Tom Pura with the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce says the theme means the week will be about stories of innovation and resilience.

“Normally, Small Business Week is a celebration of business. This year, obviously, there is less to celebrate and more about recognizing business and recognizing the efforts of entrepreneurs to recover and be resilient and find innovative ways to stay afloat.”

He says there has been a variety of circumstances for local operations during the pandemic.

“It’s difficult for some. They are not focused on anything other than just keeping the lights on and keeping the doors open. That is why you have to encourage people to try and seek out those local businesses and the ones that they have always supported and to do so now more than ever.”

Pura is also hopeful that people will try out other local businesses that they have not tried before.

One virtual event next Thursday will replace the usual in-person ones. Pura says humourist Linda Edgecombe and BDC president and CEO Mike Denham will be the guest speakers.

“We’re so excited about Linda Edgecombe. She is just a wonderful humourist, she’s a trainer, she’s a consultant, a speaker. We’re so excited, looking forward to her message of providing, maybe a little bit of humour and making some people smile and laugh a little bit because I think we could all use it.”

Registration for this virtual event is available here. The deadline to register is Friday.
