Slave Lake councillor apologizes for comments regarding Indigenous homeless

Nov 9, 2020 | 2:31 PM

SLAVE LAKE, Alta. – A northern Alberta councillor says she is deeply sorry for recommending her town stop feeding and “being so nice” to its Indigenous homeless population.

In September, Slave Lake Councillor Joy McGregor gave an update during a council meeting on the homeless population in the community

During the update, she said First Nations people from neighbouring communities were coming to Slave Lake..

She said Slave Lake needed to work to get them home and should stop doing “wonderful things” for the First Nations homeless.

A 500-word apology posted to McGregor’s Facebook page today, which has since been shared by the Town of Slave Lake, says she is sorry for the inconsiderate language she used.

The post adds that she is deeply sorry to those affected by her poor choice of words and for the feelings people have felt since the September town council meeting.
