Dec 3, 2020 | 6:00 AM

The County of Grande Prairie has hired its first-ever director of financial services.

Mark Schonken will assume the newly created position January 18.

He has 23 years of financial experience with private business and municipalities, most recently as the chief financial officer with the MD of Opportunity.

Schonken will oversee the County’s Assessments, Asset Management, Finance, Procurement Services and Risk Management departments.

“I’m looking forward to joining the dynamic team at the County of Grande Prairie. My family is excited to make the County our new home and be part of your vibrant community,” says Schonken in a news release from the County of Grande Prairie.

The County says in the same release that this position came about as part of a restructuring it hopes will support future growth. The new structure will be in place as of the new year.

The County is also looking to fill a vacant director of corporate services job.
