Eighth COVID-19 fatality reported in City of Grande Prairie

The eighth death linked to COVID-19 since March has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie.

The fatality was one of 18 fatalities announced by Alberta Health on Wednesday, bringing the province’s death toll from COVID-19 to 1,046 as of the end of day December 29.

Alberta Health tells EverythingGP the fatality was a female in her 90’s who passed away on December 22. The death was linked to the outbreak announced at the Mackenzie Place Continuing Care Centre.

The death was announced as seven new cases were identified in the City on Tuesday along with seven recoveries. There are now 127 active cases in the City of Grande Prairie as of December 29.

Two new cases were identified in the County of Grande Prairie on Tuesday along with one recovery. There are now 28 active cases there.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day December 29 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 770 cases (127 active, 635 recovered, eight deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 234 cases (28 active, 205 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 143 cases (19 active, 123 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 37 cases (five active, 32 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: Nine cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 91 cases (six active, 75 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 202 cases (90 active, 107 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 103 cases (nine active, 94 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 186 cases (13 active, 173 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 58 cases (one active, 56 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 99 cases (one active, 97 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 96 cases (21 active, 75 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 70 cases (one active, 69 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 479 cases (15 active, 450 recovered, 14 deaths)

Wednesday also saw Alberta surpass 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since March, as there were 1,287 new cases identified. The new cases come as 14,807 tests were completed, giving a positivity rate of 8.7 per cent.

Hospitalizations increased by one in the North Zone to 57 on Tuesday, with four of those individuals in an ICU. In Alberta, 921 people are now in hospital, 152 of whom have been admitted into intensive care.
