City of Grande Prairie records tenth COVID-19 fatality

The tenth fatality linked to COVID-19 has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie, as one of 31 being reported by Alberta Health for Saturday’s update.

Alberta Health says the fatality was a man in his 90’s, not linked to an announced outbreak site.

The death is the 75th recorded in the North Zone since March from COVID-19. The 31 deaths reported on Saturday bring Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll to 1,272.

The death was recorded as there were 11 new cases reported in the Swan City for January 8 alongside one recovery. There are now 158 active cases in Grande Prairie as of the end of day Friday.

One new case was recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Friday, bringing the active case total there to 41.

An increase of 19 cases was recorded in the MD of Greenview, meanwhile, where there are now 70 active cases. Of those cases, 49 are in the Valleyview area and 11 are in the Fox Creek area.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 8 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 899 cases (158 active, 731 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 268 cases (41 active, 225 recovered, two deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 207 cases (70 active, 136 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 42 cases (five active, 37 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 14 cases (five active, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 94 cases (five active, 79 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 312 cases (146 active, 160 recovered, six deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 132 cases (32 active, 100 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 284 cases (100 active, 184 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 55 cases (one active, 53 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 105 cases (one active, 103 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 164 cases (72 active, 99 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 70 cases (all recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 502 cases (26 active, 461 recovered, 15 deaths)

Alberta recorded 989 new cases following 13,540 new tests being completed, creating a positivity rate of 7.1 per cent.

Hospitalizations in Alberta continued to decline for Friday, with total admissions for COVID-19 dropping by 24 to 827. ICU admissions, which are also included in total hospitalizations, sit at 132.

There are 63 people in hospital in the North Zone, five of whom are in intensive care.

As of January 8, the province has administered 42,333 doses of vaccine, an increase of over 4,600 on Friday.
