It is with broken hearts that the family of Karen Nielsen, shares the passing of a wife, sister, aunt and friend to so many.
Karen Janice Nielsen (nee Metituk), longtime resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away quietly on Sunday, January 10, 2021, at the age of 63 years, with her loving husband Tim and sister Debbie by her side. Karen fought an inspirational battle with cancer for 18 years. She was in peace when she left us, with love in her heart, and with the certainty of God’s love within her.
Karen was born on March 9, 1957, to Victor and Lois Metituk. She was number 10 of 12 children. She grew up on a farm outside of Wembley, AB, completing her schooling in Wembley and Beaverlodge. After graduating, she moved to Grande Prairie, where she eventually went to GPRC, then to the University of Alberta to earn her BSC degree in nutrition.
She was a selfless, caring, strong, outspoken woman with great determination, an awesome, sarcastic sense of humour, and a tremendous love for family. She was always a hard worker. Her first job was planting trees during the summer holidays, then onto Canfor, eventually ending up grading lumber. After she received her degree, she worked as a consultant and hosted many seminars on the importance of nutrition and exercise. In 2001, she opened a Curves franchise, which was very popular with many women in the area. Karen had a great zest for life, always living each day to the fullest. She always enjoyed and attended family celebrations, whether it was a Christmas concert for a niece or nephew, baby showers, retirement or birthday parties, or graduations. She believed every holiday or achievement was a cause for celebration. For anyone who knew Karen, they will know she had a knack for always looking her best regardless of what she was doing; whether it be camping or backpacking, she always had her makeup and hair done. She would crawl out of her tent looking like a million bucks!
Karen will be sadly missed by her husband Tim Nielsen; father and mother in-law Don and Ruth Nielsen; brother and sister in-law Mark and Brenda Nielsen; siblings: Garth (Rose) Koll, Mansell (Sue) Koll, Ellen Desnoyers, Sharon Mazurkewich, Mike (Brenda) Metituk, Murray (Rene) Metituk, Ted (Barb) Metituk, Debbie (Les) Pellerin, and Vicki Metituk (Reid Floen); many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as her lifelong friends: Helen Metituk, Cheryl Weaver and many, many more close friends.
She was predeceased by her mom and dad Victor and Lois Metituk; sister Beryl Merriam; nephew Craig Pellerin; brother in-law Doug Russel; and lifelong friend Linda Tangen.
