Power outages reported across Grande Prairie area following gusty winds

Jan 19, 2021 | 4:49 PM

A wind warning issued for the Grande Prairie area Tuesday morning did come to fruition Tuesday afternoon, as a mixed bag of strong winds, rain and snow also saw power get knocked out to some areas of the region.

Environment Canada clocked wind gusts at 104 km/h at the Grande Prairie Airport at 4 p.m., which even reached close to 120 km/h at times.

A wind warning remains in effect for most of northwest Alberta Tuesday, with the weather office saying winds should subside before morning.

The weather has seemingly knocked out power to several areas in the region.

In Grande Prairie, ATCO Electric says 664 customers are without power in the Mountview/Summit/Ivy Lake area. Power is estimated to be restored by 6:30 Tuesday evening.

Outages have also been reported in Wembley, Dimsdale, La Glace and Valhalla Centre. ATCO says an outage in the Goodfare area, west of Beaverlodge, has impacted 143 customers. Power there is also estimated to be restored by 6:30 p.m.
