Three more COVID-19 deaths recorded in Grande Prairie

Three more deaths linked to COVID-19 have been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie, all of which are tied to outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

Two of the deaths announced by Alberta Health on Sunday were linked to the outbreak at the Grande Prairie Care Centre. The first occurred on January 21 and was a woman in her 90s. The second occurred on on January 22, and was a man in his 90s.

The third fatality from COVID-19 announced Sunday in Grande Prairie was linked to the outbreak at the Prairie Lake Supportive Living facility. It occurred on January 21 and was a man in his 90s.

There have now been 18 deaths from COVID-19 related complications in the Swan City during the pandemic. Alberta Health announced 24 new deaths on Sunday, bringing the province’s death toll to 1,549.

The deaths come as five new cases were recorded in the City of Grande Prairie along with four recoveries. There are now 192 active cases in the city as of Saturday.

The County of Grande Prairie saw eight new cases for January 23 long with one recovery. There are now 60 active cases there.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 23 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,107 cases (192 active, 894 recovered, 18 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 335 cases (60 active, 271 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 275 cases (54 active, 220 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Nine cases (two active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 42 cases (all recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 106 cases (12 active, 84 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 433 cases (80 active, 345 recovered, eight deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 168 cases (25 active, 143 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 338 cases (49 active, 289 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 56 cases (55 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (one active, 104 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 212 cases (23 active, 188 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 72 cases (three active, 69 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 534 cases (32 active, 487 recovered, 15 deaths)

Alberta as a whole added 463 new cases for January 23 following the completion of 10,237 tests. That created a positivity rate of 4.5 per cent.

Hospitalizations in Alberta declined to 652, with 111 of those people in an ICU. In the North Zone, 76 people are in hospital, with seven of those individuals in an ICU.

The province says as of Saturday, 99,047 doses of vaccine have been administered.
