The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) in Grande Prairie helped bring down a suspected drug dealer in Whitecourt earlier this month.

ALERT’s organized crime and gang team in Grande Prairie assisted the Whitecourt RCMP in the search of a home in Whitecourt on January 21, as part of a joint drug trafficking investigation which was started in November.

Authorities say the search of the home turned up about $28,000 worth of drugs and cash, including 179 grams meth, 43 grams of cocaine, $13,610 cash, and a shotgun.

A Whitecourt man, 27-year-old Daniel Lee Scherer, was arrested and charged following the search. He faces charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking (both meth and cocaine), possession of a firearm without authorization, unsafe storage of firearm, two counts of failure to comply with undertaking conditions and possession of property obtained by crime.

“Harmful drugs, such as methamphetamine, bring an assortment of negative consequences to our community,” said Sgt. Ted Zadderey, Whitecourt RCMP Operations NCOi/c. “Whitecourt RCMP is grateful to partner with ALERT and get these drugs off the street.”

Following a judicial hearing, Scherer was released on several conditions to appear in Whitecourt Provincial Court on February 23.

RCMP ask anyone who suspects drug or gang activity in their community to report it to their local police.
