Twelve new COVID-19 cases in Grande Prairie, 18 recoveries

Active cases of COVID-19 dropped on Tuesday, as there were 12 new cases and 18 more recoveries recorded on January 26, bringing the city’s active case load to 160.

One new case was identified in the County of Grande Prairie and two more recoveries, lowering the number of active cases there to 43.

Elsewhere in the Peace Region, the ninth death from COVID-19 was recorded in the Big Lakes County area. Alberta Health says the death was one of three in the North Zone announced on Wednesday, and was a man in his 40’s and not linked to an outbreak site. AH adds comorbidities in this case are unknown at this time.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day Janaury 26 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,131 cases (160 active, 952 recovered, 19 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 338 cases (43 active, 291 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 281 cases (38 active, 242 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Nine cases (two active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 42 cases (all recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 109 cases (12 active, 87 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 440 cases (49 active, 382 recovered, nine deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 183 cases (26 active, 157 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 344 cases (31 active, 313 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 56 cases (55 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (one active, 104 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 212 cases (10 active, 201 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 71 cases (two active, 69 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 546 cases (43 active, 488 recovered, 15 deaths)

There were 459 new cases recorded in Alberta for January 26, following over 12,800 tests being completed. Chief medical officer of health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, says the province’s positivity rate sits at about 3.6 per cent.

Hospitalizations declined to 610 in Alberta as of the end of day Tuesday, with 110 of those individuals in an ICU. In the North Zone, 72 people are in hospital, eight of whom are in an ICU.

There were a total of 12 deaths from COVID-19 announced on Wednesday in the province, including the three in the North Zone. There have now been 1,599 fatalities linked to COVID-19.

As of Tuesday, 101,123 doses of vaccine have been administered in Alberta. Dr. Hinshaw says over 11,000 Albertans have been fully vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine.
