Collaboration to bring French Bachelor of Education program through GPRC

Feb 12, 2021 | 5:34 PM

Grande Prairie Regional College and the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean announced they are collaborating to offer a French Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.) program starting in the fall of 2021.

In a release, the two say four French programs will be offered at the GPRC satellite campus. They include:

  • B.Ed. Elementary (the first two years in Grande Prairie, the last two years at Campus Saint-Jean, practicum in the Grande Prairie region)
  • B.Ed. Secondary (the first two years in Grande Prairie, the last two years at Campus Saint-Jean, practicum in the Grande Prairie region)
  • B.Ed./After Diploma Elementary (courses and practicum, both years in Grande Prairie)
  • B.Ed./After Diploma Secondary (courses and practicum, both years in Grande Prairie)

The two schools say the agreement comes as part of the Training space: growing capacity to meet teacher demand program, which is a three-year provincial project, started in 2020 that aims to expand access to Campus Saint-Jean’s B.Ed programs to Northern and Southern Alberta.

Satellite campuses have been established in both Calgary and Red Deer, along with Grande Prairie.

“Together with Campus Saint-Jean we are mobilizing opportunity while delivering in-demand, student-centered and future-focused programming,” said GPRC’s Dr. Brian Redmond, Dean, School of Arts, Science and Upgrading. “It’s these types of partnerships that bring GPRC one step closer to our goal of becoming the northern centre of post-secondary excellence in Alberta.”

The partnership hopes to boost the number of teachers in French immersion and Francophone schools in the Peace Region and across Alberta, and to help meet the needs of French communities.

Professor Pierre-Yves Mocquais, Dean of the Faculté Saint-Jean and Executive Officer of Campus Saint-Jean, says he is pleased with the partnership and hopes it can remain viable.

“Campus Saint-Jean is counting on the support of the various Francophone and Francophile community actors to ensure the sustainability of this ambitious project.”

Registration for the program is now open and closes date of March 1, 2021.
