Annual Chilly Willy Run returning to Grande Prairie, virtually, February 15

Feb 13, 2021 | 7:00 AM

The third annual Chilly Willy Run is returning to Grande Prairie on February 15.

In a normal year, the run takes place in early February at Muskoseepi Park but because of COVID-19 restrictions, it is moving to a virtual format

This year’s Chilly Willy Run will last until March 15. Johnathan Clarkson, the General Manager of Nitehawk, says with the event moving online this year, he’s hoping it will inspire residents in Grande Prairie to get out and get active.

“What participants will do is they’ve got their choice of either signing up for the five, ten, or twenty kilometre run. They can run that distance as many times as they want or all three distances as many times as they want over the course of the month.

“The key of the virtual challenge is to keep moving and keep active throughout the entire event. Throughout that event, we’ll have a private Facebook group page where we’ll be running with nightly live video chats that will feature prize giveaways and things like that.”

The cost to take part is $45.00 per adult, $30.00 for a young person. It costs $15.00 extra to add an additional adult runner and it costs an extra $10.00 to add an additional youth.

The cash goes towards the prizes that participants can win, as well as some other swag.

Clarkson is hopeful as many people as possible will join the run this year.

“Typically, we’d like to see upwards of 200 people taking part. The Grande Prairie running community is a very active and large one and we typically get some great participation that way.”

Clarkson mentioned participants can also complete their runs indoors on treadmills if the weather outside is too cold.

You can register for the run by visiting Nitehawk’s website.
