City, Art Gallery of Grande Prairie to host ice carving exhibit

Feb 20, 2021 | 7:00 AM

The City and Art Gallery of Grande Prairie are teaming up to host an ice carving exhibit at the Mamawe Concourse of the Montrose Cultural Centre on February 28th and March 1st.

Two artists from the Ice on Whyte Festival in Edmonton will be in the Swan City to create Grande Prairie-style works in real time over the two-day event via a Facebook livestream, which will then remain displayed on the concourse through the remainder of the winter season.

Jamie Lee Cormier with the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie says the carvers will likely try to create a swan, as well as other exhibits that represent the city.

“We’ll just give them an image list, and they’ll be creative and we’ll let them use their artistic skills and create something amazing,” said Cormier. “I’m sure they won’t disappoint.”

The gallery will stream the live carvings on its Facebook page on both days. The completed works will then be on display outside the Montrose Cultural Centre for the rest of the winter season.

“We chose the Mamawe concourse area just because the city has that nice skating oval there this year,” said Cormier. “So, people can come down and skate around that and check out the ice sculptures.”
