COVID-19 fatality recorded in Grande Prairie as city adds 13 new cases

The City of Grande Prairie has recorded its 23rd death linked to COVID-19.

Alberta Health says the latest fatality was a female in her 80s which occurred on Feb. 27, linked to the outbreak at the Heritage Lodge seniors home. It is the first death linked to this outbreak, which was publicly announced by Alberta Health on February 16.

Alberta Health says there are now 21 cases linked to the outbreak at Heritage Lodge as of Feb 28. Fifteen of those cases remain active and five have recovered, along with the one fatality.

The death was one of two deaths reported to Alberta Health on Monday across the province, bringing the provincial death toll to 1,888 as of Feb. 28.

Meanwhile, there were 291 new cases of COVID-19 identified in Alberta on 5,933 tests Sunday, resulting in a 4.9 per cent test positivity rate.

The City of Grande Prairie added 13 new cases of COVID-19, along with 10 recoveries, there are currently 204 active cases of in the city.

The County of Grande Prairie added five new cases and had three recoveries, there are now 56 active cases in the county.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day Feb. 28 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,634 cases (204 active, 1,407 recovered, 23 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 458 cases (56 active, 399 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 387 cases (41 active, 343 recovered, three deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 12 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 47 cases (two active, 45 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, all recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 110 cases (100 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 461 cases (eight active, 442 recovered, 11 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 253 cases (22 active, 231 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 440 cases (51 active, 389 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 57 cases (56 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (105 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 236 cases (eight active, 227 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 94 cases (18 active, 76 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 869 cases (269 active, 584 recovered, 16 deaths)

Across the province, hospitalizations grew from 250 to 257, while ICU patients also grew by two from 46 to 48. In the North Zone, hospitalizations fell by three to 25, while there is just one patient in the ICU.

As of Sunday, 235,508 Albertans have been vaccinated against COVID-19, 88,145 Albertans have been fully immunized.
