GPCSD celebrating successful reverse food drive

Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools are celebrating a successful food drive from this past weekend.

On March 6, students, parents, staff, as well as members of the community gathered at St Joseph’s Catholic Church to collect food for various organizations in the city.

“There’s a group of us basically called the ‘Grace Group’, so we’re kind of grateful advocates of Catholic education and we enlisted the support of schools, as well as the community members to raise food and necessities for various organizations,” explained Karl Germann, the Superintendent for Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools when asked about why the food drive was started.

“It was our goal to raise a little bit of food and see what we can do to contribute back to the community, because right now is a time when the food banks start to get a little lower, and peoples needs start to come back again because the caring and love over the Christmas rush have dissipated a bit.”

The fundraiser proved to be successful, as the reverse food drive was able to collect half a semi-truck trailer full of food and other needed items for local non-profit organizations.

Germann says while the schools did show up and did their part contributing to this food drive, the local community also showcased some true community spirit.

“We had really large community support throughout the day on Saturday. We had a nonstop path of people coming our way and they donated a lot of food.”

“It just seems to be an easy event for people to pull off because people don’t mind coming to a place, opening their trunk in a COVID friendly way, people take it out of their vehicle, put it in the semi and then we deliver it.”

According to Germann, the response from the community exceeded his expectations. He thanks everyone who contributed.

Similar drives were held in Beaverlodge, Spirit River and Sexsmith on Saturday, as well.
