Lack of testing capability brings fear of unreported, untreated cases of STIs
With the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions limiting testing capabilities through 2020, an official with Northreach Society says there’s concerns of undiagnosed cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) being unknowingly transmitted in the Grande Prairie area.
Lindsay Loset, the Community Based Health and Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infection (STBBI) Manager for Northreach, says they haven’t been able to offer in-person testing this past year, which raises concerns of cases going unreported and spreading in the community.
She says it’s especially troubling because syphilis and congenital syphilis has been on the rise in recent years.
“Since 2018 we’ve seen a huge increase in syphilis rates and then also congenital syphilis, that’s when a mother has syphilis when pregnant and it goes untreated and it’s passed on to her baby when the baby is born,” says Loset.
