Registration open for annual City Scrub event

Apr 11, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Registration is now open for those interested in participating in the City of Grande Prairie’s annual City Scrub event.

It takes place from April 18 to 24 and encourages people to take 20 minutes out of their day and pick up garbage in the parks and neighbourhoods close to their homes.

With the snow melting, lots of litter that accumulated over the winter season starts to show up.

Jessica Foley with the City says this is a very popular event.

“On average we see about 8,000 residents who participate in the event. If residents would like to participate in the City Scrub, they’ll need to visit cityofgp.com/cityscrub and register themselves as an individual or a family group.”

Those who do participate in the event are asked to limit their group to 10 individuals, as well as wear masks, to comply with the Province of Alberta’s COVID-19 guidelines.

Once a group is registered, they’ll be assigned a location. Foley says the City will provide the supplies participants will need.

“There will be gloves available, garbage bags, as well as bag tags if their landfill carts are full. If that happens, you can put the bag tags on the garbage and place it outside for curbside pickup.”

According to Foley, on a yearly basis, residents collect over 15 tonnes of garbage that has been left behind over the winter.

While this is a big week where everybody gets together and cleans, residents are asked to always pick up any garbage they see.
