Story Walk heading to downtown core

Apr 16, 2021 | 5:30 AM

Frontier College, the Grande Prairie and Area Family Resource Network and Grande Prairie Downtown Association are partnering up to bring the Story Walk program back to the City.

The program was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and is a program used to keep children’s minds active during the summer months when many stop reading because school is out.

The Story Walk asks participants to start at a set starting point and to make their way through the downtown core and read each page of a children’s book that is posted in the window of each business.

Janine Kozlowski with Frontier College in Grande Prairie says she hopes this can help get families out walking through the downtown core.

“I’ve taken apart a really fun book this time called The Love Letter. It’s been laminated and we’re going to put it up in the downtown store’s windows. That way, everybody will be able to safely read it.”

Kozlowski mentioned the Story Walk downtown will last for a week from April 19-24. Her hope is then to have it move back to Muskoseepi Park for the summer months.

“We moved from the park this time because I can’t count on the weather this time of the year and it might be hard to really put stakes into the ground, so this just seemed like a great way to get the rest of our community involved, get folks going downtown and enjoying the downtown core.”

The route for the Story Walk will go as followed:

Kozlowski tells EverythingGP last year’s Story Walk in the summer was successful as over 500 people filled out the virtual survey and gave plenty of positive feedback.

At the end of a story, a QR code is available for people to scan and fill out a survey.

Kozlowski added businesses and the downtown association are pumped for this event.

“It’s exciting! It’s a new way to get literacy into our community.”

Kozlowski mentioned they are hopeful they’ll be able to organize another Story Walk event downtown in the summer.
