Murder of George Floyd

Ex-Minneapolis cop guilty of murder, manslaughter in death of George Floyd

Apr 20, 2021 | 3:23 PM

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty on all three charges he faced in the death of George Floyd.

Floyd died last May after Chauvin, a White officer, pinned his knee on the 46-year-old Black man’s neck for about 9 1/2 minutes in a case that triggered worldwide protests, violence and a furious re-examination of racism and policing in the U.S.

Chauvin was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s May 25, 2020 death. Jurors had to reach a unanimous verdict on each count.

The jury deliberated over parts of two days in a city on edge against another outbreak of unrest like that that erupted last spring.
