Grande Prairie Library given Community Engagement Award for Full Stop program

The Grande Prairie Public Library was awarded the Community Engagement Award from the City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Advisory Council earlier this week for their Full Stop program.

The Full Stop program was launched in November 2019 in partnership with the Community Foundation of Grande Prairie and the RBC Future Launch Challenge.

The goal of the program was to offer free menstrual products to guests at the library.

“We were so thrilled to be recognized for (Full Stop) and how its really helped break down those barriers associated with period poverty especially with youth,” said Hailey McCullough, the Head of Adult Services for the Grande Prairie Public Library.

McCullough tells EverythingGP over the 1.5 years of the program, they’ve seen tremendous success with the Full Stop program.

“It’s had a positive impact in the community. It’s given us a chance to educate people on period poverty and period stigma and to provide free pads and tampons in all of our library washrooms. So, those who can’t afford to access those products themselves can come to the library and get them.”

According to McCullough, the success of the program has seen other businesses reach out and look to implement something similar.

“We’ve had several organizations throughout the region contact us and ask us how they can implement similar programs themselves. We’ve always been really happy to share that information and help give them those answers to help combat period poverty and period stigma in their communities and help get them those products as well.”

Those interested in helping the ongoing funding of the Full Stop program can do so by heading to the library’s website, or by calling 780-532-3580.
