The Grande Prairie area is set to receive a good soaking of rain over the next couple of days, bringing with it cooler temperatures.

Environment Canada meteorologist Sara Hoffman says a weather pattern moving over the prairies is set to bring between 20 and 30 millimetres of rain by Wednesday morning.

“A big pool of cold air is moving in off the Pacific (Ocean), and that is creating a big change,” said Hoffman. “We’re forecasting well below normal temperatures for Monday and Tuesday, and really into most of this week.”

Hoffman says the normal temperature for this time of year in the Grande Prairie area is 18 degrees Celsius. As of noon on Monday, Environment Canada is calling for a high of 13 for Monday, while Tuesday is only forecasted to reach plus five.

Those cold temperatures could also bring periods of wet snow on Tuesday.

Hoffman adds while this weather system could keep temperatures below seasonal through the rest of the month, the skies should clear up for the end of this week, with temperatures slightly increasing and getting back to seasonal levels.

“We’re anticipating a surface ridge to push down and clear out the area, so some sunny skies once all this rain and cloud exits the province, is in the forecast.”

As of noon Monday, Environment Canada is calling for sunny skies on both Friday and Saturday, with highs of 17 and 19 degrees respectively.
