Gordon Carl Bellwood, resident of Clairmont, AB, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021, at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 83 years.
Gordon was born February 5, 1938, in Swift Current, SK, to Leyster and Rosalie Bellwood. He was the firstborn in the family which eventually grew to include Harold, Irene, and Norman. In 1942, Gordon and the family moved to Northmark, AB, just west of Woking, Alberta. The family eventually moved to a little farm south of Grande Prairie.
In 1959 he married Lynne Milliken and they started their married life on Gordon’s parent’s small farm. While on the farm they welcomed their children, Greg in 1960, Randy (deceased) in 1962, Blaine in 1963, Donna in 1967, and Darryl in 1969. Upon the arrival of Darryl in 1969, the family moved to Clairmont where Gordon and Lynne have resided for the past 51 years.
Gordon was a true MacGyver he could fix anything and could figure out almost anything. He loved to remind us “necessity is the mother of invention” so if you couldn’t buy it or find it, then make it and he did. He loved working on his metal lathe machining. Another thing he liked to say was “fine as frog’s hair” when asked, “how he was”.
Gordon looked forward to spring every year because it meant time for planting, whether it be crops, gardens, the flower beds at home, or the potato patch that could feed an army. Gordon loved to grow things, he had the greenest thumb anybody could ask for. When he was not gardening or puttering about the yard at home he could be found at Greg and Bev’s farm working on his other passions: fixing small engines and creating things, or just lending a hand.
Gordon loved to camp, fish, quad, hunt, and snowmobile. The snowmobiling became a very large part of the Bellwood family’s life when Gordon started Bellwood Sno-Jet Sales and then later switched to a Kawasaki dealership. Gordon took his last trip to Kakwa Lake when he was 80 with Greg, Blaine, and Darryl. After that, he didn’t go out to the mountains but he rode around Greg and Bev’s farm when the notion struck.
The other place Gordon was happy was when he was helping his cousins pull in the harvest in fall, he loved being on the combine and helping out. Gordon was always there to help others when needed. In the fall when he wasn’t helping bring in the harvest he was hunting another of his passions.
Gordon instilled in all 4 of his children the love of camping, fishing, quadding, snowmobiling and hunting. He taught all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that you can do anything you put your mind too. Integrity is a value Gordon instilled in all of us as well.
Gordon will be sadly missed by his wife of 62 years Lynne; children: Greg (Bev) Bellwood, Blaine Bellwood, Donna (Mel) Senay, Darryl (Karen Skarberg) Bellwood; grandchildren: Charmaine (RJ) Gairdner, Randy Bellwood, Ashley Bellwood, Kristina (Carson) Foshaug, Jarret (Felicia) Bellwood, and Braeden (Brianna Scobey) Bellwood; great-grandchildren: Keyairra, Gavin, and Brody Gairdner; brothers Harold Bellwood, Norman Bellwood; and sister Irene Courchene; as well as, all of the extended children and grandchildren he collected over his life path.
He was predeceased by his son Randy Christopher; parents Leyster and Rosalie Bellwood; beloved sister in-law Helen Bellwood; brother in-law David Milliken; as well as, many aunts, uncles and good friends.
Gordon/Dad;
19 days ago you went into the hospital.
14 days ago the tumour was found; we hoped for the best, but expected the worst
7 days ago we hoped to bring you home one last time to say goodbye in person but it was not to be – you were too weak already
6 days ago we got to see you in person
Last night we said goodbye for the final time.
We love you very much.
Gordon was the rock in the Bellwood family ocean, his love was like a ripple….
Kindness
A single act of kindness
Like a stone tossed in a pond,
Sends rings of ripples outward
That travel far beyond.
And joining other ripples,
Flow outward to the sea,
A single act of kindness
Affects Eternity.
