Grande Prairie records two new COVID-19 cases, 16 recoveries

The City of Grande Prairie added two new cases of COVID-19 and 16 recoveries for Tuesday, May 25, bringing the active case total in the city down by 14 to 121.

That active case count is the lowest recorded in the Swan City since January 5, when there were also 121 active cases recorded for that day’s update.

Six new cases and four recoveries were recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Tuesday. There are now 58 active cases there.

The new cases come as the province laid out its “Open for Summer” staged relaunch plan, which has an aim of removing most all public health restrictions possibly by July.

There were 390 new cases of COVID-19 identified across Alberta following the completion of 5,979 tests, resulting in a 6.5 per cent test positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day May 25 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,839 cases (121 active, 3,692 recovered, 26 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,347 cases (58 active, 1,284 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 579 cases (24 active, 551 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 30 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 81 cases (one active, 80 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 29 cases (three active, 26 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 146 cases (two active, 134 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 710 cases (four active, 694 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 355 cases (three active, 351 recovered, one death)
  • M.D. of Peace: 672 cases (10 active, 662 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 131 cases (nine active, 121 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 135 cases (one active, 133 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 311 cases (one active, 309 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 135 cases (nine active, 126 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,850 cases (80 active, 1,744 recovered, 26 deaths)

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 in Alberta have decreased by 17 to 548 as of Tuesday night, while the number of ICU patients decreased by one to 157.

In the North Zone, 53 people are in hospital (down eight), 14 of whom are in intensive care (up one).

There were six new deaths reported to Alberta Health from across the province over the last 24 hours. A total of 2,198 Albertans have now died as a result of COVID-19 complications.

The City of Grande Prairie now has 34.8 per cent of its population with at least one dose of vaccine. Another 519 people have been reported to have had their first shot, bringing the total number of people in Grande Prairie to get at least the first dose to 26,080.

In the County, 191 more people have been reported to have their first dose. In the east and west County region combined, 11,810 people have received at least one dose, equalling 35.1 per cent of the population.

Across Alberta, 26,260 doses were given out on Tuesday, bringing the total number of Albertans who have received at least one dose of vaccine to 2,220,614*.

That total means 49.7 per cent of Albertans are immunized with at least one dose, or 58.3 per cent of those aged 12+. Alberta Health adds eight per cent of the population is fully vaccinated.
