Kenney, Dr. Hinshaw to discuss Alberta’s reopening plan

May 27, 2021 | 2:34 PM

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will provide an update this afternoon the province’s efforts to contain COVID-19 and fully reopen by mid-summer.

A news conference is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. You can watch it live here.

Kenney said on Wednesday that most pandemic restrictions could be lifted by early July if people continue to get vaccinated.

The premier unveiled a provincial reopening plan that is dependent on CVOID-19 vaccination benchmarks and hospitalization numbers. It calls for hair salons and restaurant patios to reopen on Tuesday, indoor dining to resume in mid-June and nearly all orders to be scrapped in time for the Calgary Stampede.

Kenney says trending indicators look good following a recent surge in cases, but he’s challenging people to get vaccinated as soon as possible to beat back the grip of the pandemic.

Across Alberta on Wednesday, there were 10,953 active cases. Alberta reported 390 new cases and six deaths. Hospitals were treating 548 COVID-19 patients, including 157 in ICUs.
