Stephan “Steve” Melnyk, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, in Grande Prairie, at the age of 92 years.
Steve was born on January 7, 1929 in Rosthern, SK. He was raised in the Belloy and Codesa area of Alberta and farmed there in until 1974. He ran water trucks in the winter and farmed in the summer. In 1957, he studied construction at SAIT, where he met his wife Bertha. He worked for Alberta Hail and Crop Insurance.
Steve enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He was an Elk member since 1989. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and going to family reunions.
He will be sadly missed by his children: Rick (Jeannette) Melnyk, Robert Stevenson, and Diana (Neal) Toews; grandchildren: Rae-Ann, Devin, Robert, Chrissy, Samantha, AJ, Jamie, Amber, Stacy, Scott, Darren, and Jason; 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren; as well as sisters: Emily Biersdorfer of Victoria, BC and Sally Shmyr of Grande Prairie.
Steve was predeceased by his wife Bertha (2013), son Donald (1985), daughter Debra (1961), brother Orist, father Axenty, and mother Natalka.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brad Martin for his medical attention over the years and to the staff of Heritage Lodge, MacKenzie Place and Grande Prairie Care Centre for their care shown to Steve.
A Private Family Service will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. Interment to follow at Grande Prairie Cemetery.
