Increased Enforcement

RCMP watching for construction zone speeders along Highway 43 near Fox Creek

The RCMP is asking drivers to slow down in construction zones with the road work season well underway, while they are also warning those driving along Highway 43 through Fox Creek that there will be increased enforcement.

Police say the stretch of Highway 43 between Highway 947 and Kaybob Drive has a reduced speed limit, and officers will be keeping a close eye out for speeders along that stretch.

They say drivers need to be extra cautious when going through a construction zone, adding lowered speed limits are set for two reasons as well.

“First, they represent the maximum speed you can safely drive at given the road conditions,” said Corporal Deanna Fontaine, in a media release. “Second, they safeguard workers, who are at risk of being struck by passing vehicles that are moving too quickly.”

She adds this is important even when it may seem there is no activity in a given construction zone, as hidden hazards like fresh oil, loose gravel and uneven pavement can create danger for vehicles going too fast.

“The speed limit in construction zones must be obeyed at all times,” she adds. “This applies even when people and equipment are not working. If workers are present, the fines in these areas will be doubled.”

Fontaine suggests those who wish to avoid construction zones altogether should plan ahead by using 511 Alberta.
