City of Grande Prairie lifting capacity restrictions for Canada Day events

Jun 22, 2021 | 3:01 PM

The City of Grande Prairie says in alignment with the provincial government’s Open for Summer plan, all COVID-19 restrictions on capacity limits at Canada Day live performances will be lifted.

Previously, the Picnic in the Park event from noon to 5 p.m. in Muskoseepi Park was only open for those who had booked time slots. The event will now be open for everyone to attend at their leisure.

The Plaza Rock event, which goes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. outside of Revolution Place, will also go ahead at full venue capacity. Tickets for that can be purchased here.

“We’re really looking forward to bringing people together to enjoy Canada Day and celebrate everything that is Canada,” said Interim Mayor Jackie Clayton.

The dual drive-in fireworks shows will still be taking place at both Muskoseepi Park and the east football field of the Community Knowledge Campus at 11:30 p.m. on July 1.

“I think people are looking forward to seeing the fireworks, and it’s great that they are still in two locations, because more people can enjoy the fireworks.”

Clayton says she is expecting a big turnout to the festivities, as mostly all public health restrictions in Alberta will be lifted on Canada Day.

She feels many residents are eager to get back out and expand their social circles for the first time in 16 months.

“People are tired of being behind their screens, and people are tired of being in their houses,” said Clayton. “I think people are really looking forward to what the city is offering.”
