UPDATE: The severe thunderstorm watch for the Grande Prairie forecast area has ended.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the Grande Prairie-Beaverlodge-Valleyview forecast area, as severe storms could develop Saturday.

The weather office says thunderstorms are expected to move across northern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories today. Some of these thunderstorms are expected to become severe.

“Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles,” warns the weather authority.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The watch is also in effect for the Peace River-Fairview-High Prairie-Manning area as well.
