New night market set to set up weekends in South Bear Creek Park

Jul 16, 2021 | 5:00 AM

Residents in Grande Prairie will have a new entertainment option to enjoy starting on the weekend of July 23-25.

The GP Night Market will be opening for the first time at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23 at South Bear Creek Park and will bring the community, local shops, restaurants, and entertainment all into one place.

“The GP Night Market is a new model that we’re bringing to Grande Prairie,” said Coryn Briggs, the Lead Organizer. “There is going to be food, retail, performers and activities for the family throughout the weekend.”

The market will be located inside the parking lot of South Bear Creek Park right beside the bike skills park.

Briggs says around 50 local businesses and restaurants have signed up to take part in the opening weekend.

“It’s been an incredible response with the people from the community,” expressed Briggs.

“This is something that we’ve wanted to create for all of the community. We are really happy and grateful that everyone is coming out to support this.”

While there will be a lot of businesses and restaurants set up at South Bear Creek Park, Briggs added the big gathering point will be at the Doug Edey Pavilion.

“We have lots of different things going on, I would say the main feature is the Doug Edey Pavilion. It’s the stage for our performers. Any of you that know Doug Edey knows he’s an incredible volunteer in our community,” said Briggs.

“We’ll also have a live DJ that will be present all weekend keeping everybody entertained in between the different acts that are going on.”

The plans are for the market to continue throughout the summer.

The GP Night Market is scheduled to take place at South Bear Creek Park on the following weekends:

  • July 23-25
  • July 30-August 1
  • August 13-15
  • August 20-22

If all goes well, Briggs mentioned they plan on bringing the market back for summer 2022.

Attendance at the GP Night Market is $4 for those aged 14 and older, and it will be free for seniors 65 and older or youth under the age of 14.

Those that are attending will be required to purchase separate tickets to use as currency. Tickets will be available at the market or can be purchased at various local businesses around town.

Briggs hopes that getting many local businesses in one place and getting people out can help the community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our main goal and vision for the market this year is to rebuild and bring our community back together. It’s been an incredibly challenging year for so many people and we feel like this is really going to set the tone for how we can come back together and rebuild our community.”
