Grande Prairie’s Martinez looks to earn spot in PFL final against Loik Radzhabov

Grande Prairie’s Alexander Martinez has an opportunity to earn a spot in the PFL Lightweight (155 lbs division) final this Friday when he takes on number one ranked Loik Radzhabov of Tajikistan.

Martinez and Radzhabov are familiar with each other as the two fought back on April 23 in Atlantic City. Martinez defeated Radzhabov via split decision during that match-up for his first-ever PFL win.

Prior to their first fight, Martinez was travelling around western Canada looking for gyms that would allow him to train, so he could stay in fighting shape just in case the PFL would give him a call. At the time, Martinez was on PFL’s reserve roster.

Following his win over Radzhabov, Martinez fought Natan Schulte of Brazil, where he suffered a controversial loss.

Martinez had to fight Schulte on short notice after former UFC Lightweight Champion Anthony Pettis withdrew because of an illness.

The semi-final fight is scheduled for three five-minute rounds and can be seen live on TSN2. It gets underway at 7:00 MST and Martinez will be the first match-up on the card.

If Martinez can win, he will earn a spot in the final and fight either Clay Collard or Raush Manfio. The fighter who wins the PFL Championship match will earn $1 million.
