Grande Prairie’s Joe Fox has strong showing at Arizona armwrestling tournament

Grande Prairie’s Joe Fox is back on the armwrestling scene after he won at the UBU Europa Fit Expo tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The tournament was held from August 6-7 and was one of the first times he was able to compete in a major tournament in nearly two years.

Fox told EverythingGP that he was first scheduled to start the tournament off against Tim Tallmadge, which he won.

“They then had a big 205-pound class pro tournament. They had some big names in there that I was a little bit worried about,” Fox said.

Fox fought featured top-ranked contenders Jamie Sheldon and Danny Gillean, as well as 11 other armwrestlers.

Fox would finish the tournament undefeated on his right arm, and battle to a second-place finish using his left arm.

Because of his performance in Arizona, Fox says its opened lots of doors and he’s been offered to pull against armwrestlers from around the world.

“I’ve got a couple opportunities. I had a guy from Poland who phoned me the other day and they want me to come down to Ukraine to a big event down there and do a match with a fellow from Kazakhstan,” said Fox.

“I (also) have a super match in California in January. If I can win that match and get in the top five in North America, I’m sure there will be some more opportunities that come my way.”

Fox mentioned he’s still debating whether or not he should take the super match over in Ukraine. He says right now his main focus is on wrestling close to home and getting ready for the provincial championship, which will be held in right here at home.

“I’ve got provincials we are hosting in Grande Prairie on October 2 and then at the end of August, there’s a tournament in Red Deer for some title belts. I’m going to come down and try to bring one of those home.”

While he’ll likely be keeping the competitions close to home, Fox added that he’s thrilled he can compete again and that the Northern Twistmasters Armwrestling Club is looking stronger than ever.

“It (the last year) has been tough. We’ve been doing practices here and there and we have probably the strongest club we’ve ever had.

“We’ve got so much potential, so many great pullers out of Grande Prairie, so I’m pretty excited for us hosting provincials on October 2. We get to showcase all of our talent out of Grande Prairie.”
