Mabel “Mae” Marion Mielke, resident of Sexsmith, AB, passed away peacefully at home in Sexsmith, on Friday, August 20, 2021, at the age of 78 years.
Mae was born on April 16, 1943, in Newbrook, AB, and was the youngest of 4 children born to Henry and Augusta Teske.
When Mae was 3 years old the family relocated to Manola, AB, where they farmed. Mae attended Springwell School to Grade 6, walking, biking or having her dad drive her on cold winter days the 3.5-mile distance. Mae attended Manola School for junior high. She started Grade 10 at Barrhead, AB, High School in 1959. Her older brothers and sister had all left home, and her father needed help on the farm, so she quit school to help with the harvest. Later that year she got a job at the Westlock Immaculate Hospital. She moved into a rooming house in Westlock, AB. During this time, she attended many country dances, mostly with her brothers and their girlfriends, where she met the love of her life, a blue-eyed, blond curly-haired fellow by the name of Alfred “Alf” Mielke.
Alf and Mae were married on March 4, 1961, and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March of this year. After they were married, they took over the Mielke family farm near Manola. They had a mixed farm operation, milk cows, pigs and chickens. To this, they added 3 children, Peggy, Glen and Lyle, which kept them very busy. Mae managed to grow a huge garden every year, as well.
In 1968, the family moved north to Hythe, AB, when Alf accepted a manager position for United Grain Growers. In 1970, Alf was offered a transfer to Sexsmith, AB, so they moved again. In 1972, Mae started a part-time job at Olson’s Meat Market. The Olson brothers were fun to work with and accepted Mae as part of their family. In 1980, she took a position as Librarian Assistant at Sexsmith Elementary School. While working there she took correspondence courses through SAIT and earned her Librarian Technician certificate. She retired in 2001.
Mae was very involved in many community activities in Sexsmith throughout the years. She taught Sunday School for a few years at the United Church. She joined the Royal Purple and was Honored Royal Lady for 1 term. She served as the President of the Ladies Curling Club for 3 years and was a member of the Peace Curling Association, Sexsmith Figure Skating Club and Sexsmith Minor Hockey Club. She served a 3-year term as President of the Morningview Ladies Golf League. She served 2 terms (1989 – 1995) on Sexsmith Town Council.
In 1989, she teamed up with Lucille Partington for a High/Low handicap golf tournament. They won the tournament and went on to win Districts then Provincials. They were very proud of that!
In retirement, Mae and Alf did lots of travelling, to many different countries and islands in the Caribbean. She loved the hot weather and enjoyed getting away during the winter.
Mae will be sadly missed by her loving husband of 60 years Alf; daughter; Peggy (Ray) Floreani; son Glen (Donna) Mielke; son Lyle Mielke; as well as grandchildren: Carmen (Jamie) Middleton, Trevor (Leisa) Floreani, Gordon Mielke (Dana Solari), and Helene Mielke (Felix Hehemann).
Mae was predeceased by her parents Henry and Augusta Teske; as well as her siblings: Vern Teske, Velmar Teske, and Ruth Schreiner.
As per Mae’s request, there will be a private family memorial service at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mae’s memory to Alberta Cancer Foundation for the Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic (710 10123 99 St., Edmonton, AB, T5J 3H1).
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Grande Prairie Cancer Clinic for providing Mae with exceptional care during her illness.
