Just 13.6% of Peace Region crop in good to excellent condition

The latest Alberta Crop Report shows conditions in the Peace Region have held over the last two weeks, remaining well below the five and ten year averages.

The report for August 24 shows that just 13.6 per cent of all crops in the region are in good to excellent condition, just a 0.3 per cent improvement from two weeks prior.

As part of that average, 28.2 per cent of oats are in good to excellent condition, along with 20.2 per cent of dry peas, 15.4 per cent of barley, 12 per cent of spring wheat, and 11.6 per cent of canola.

The five-year average for the region that covers northwestern Alberta sits at 70.1 per cent, while the 10-year average sits at 63.8 per cent.

As of August 24, about 36 per cent of the dry peas in the region had been harvested, while all other crops are just beginning to be harvested.

To date, seven per cent of major crops have been combined, and a further nine per cent is in the swath.

Harvesting in the Peace is behind the provincial average of 16.5 per cent, which Alberta Agriculture suggests could have been due to recent rain and cooler temperatures.

“Precipitation and cool temperatures, while welcome, will do very little for this year’s crop other than delay harvest,” they say in the report.

Pasture and hay ratings in the region sit at just three per cent good, with about two-thirds considered poor quality.

They add anticipated dryland yields are well below both the five and 10-year averages, which sit at 68.6 and 71.8 per cent, respectively.
