100 Avenue & 98 Street intersection scheduled to re-open next week

Despite the rainfall from the past week, work is continuing on the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project.

The next step that will be taken during the project is re-opening the intersection of 100 Avenue and 98 Street.

That intersection has been closed since August 10, as construction crews completed upgrades to underground utilities including storm, sanitary, and water lines, along with road and sidewalk work.

“There is still some work to do, but the contractor is scheduling to get it done weather permitting,” said Monty Haughian, the Business Ambassador for the City of Grande Prairie’s Phase Four Rehabilitation Project

“This rain has definitely affected how things are happening within the Downtown Rehabilitation Project for sure, but yes, they plan to open it next week.”

Haughian couldn’t give any specific dates for when the road could re-open to traffic. Although, he did say, there are still a few more things that need to be done in order for them to get the green light.

“There is a couple of operations that have to happen within the intersection to get it paved, so it’s going to take a bit yet, but (it should open) sometime next week.”

Earlier in the week, Haughian provided an update to Grande Prairie City Council on the status of the entire Downtown Rehabilitation Project.

While the project is behind schedule, Haughian says the main part of the project, which is 100 Avenue and 100 Street should be completed before the snow falls.

“It has fallen behind. The opening of the 100 Street and 100 Avenue intersection did cause a bit of a delay. There was a problem in getting the crept soil mixture to where we plant trees and that added some time. There are also some minor problems,” he explained.

“The contractor is really working hard to get back into a better situation with the timeline at this point.”

Haughian added they’ve discussed contingency plans just in case the weather decides to change and winter comes early, however, he adds getting traffic back onto 100 Avenue and 100 Street is essential.

The Downtown Rehabilitation Project is expected to be completed by the end of October.
