JDA Kings ready for home opener at County Sportsplex

Sep 25, 2021 | 6:00 AM

The County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings play their home opener at the County Sportsplex this evening at 8:00 p.m. against the Fort St. John Huskies.

The last year and a half have been up and down for the Kings, as the club has only been able to play in five exhibition games since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March 2020.

After playing just five exhibition games last year, Kings Head Coach and General Manager Kyle Chapple says the players are ready to get back to playing on home ice.

“It’s been a long time since we got to play a regular-season hockey game. We got five exhibition games in last year, got shut down, and never got going again,” explained Chapple.

“To play a meaningful game where there’s points on the line is exciting for us and for the boys to get out there and back playing.”

Chapple tells EverythingGP while it was a different type of camp this year with uncertainty still in the air, his group is still motivated to get back into a normal routine.

“It definitely was a different kind of camp and exhibition season, but at this point, we’re just focused on being able to play and keep moving forward and following all of the rules in place. We’re thankful that hockey hasn’t been shut down, and these kids get to play because they’re certainly anxious and excited to get going.”

Fans attending JDA Kings games this year will need to be aware that attendance will be capped at 100 fans for the time being.

The County Sportsplex has opted not to take part in the Restriction Exemption Program (REP), which means they’re limited to 1/3rd capacity, and all fans must wear masks and social distance in the stands.

While there are more measures in place, Chapple says they’re just happy to be able to have fans back.

“It’s a bit hard to police at times, but it’s the rules and we’re just lucky to have anyone in the building to watch and obviously to play.”

With the Kings preparing for a full season, Chapple says they’re also looking for volunteers to help out through the season. You can contact Kyle via email at kylechapple12@gmail.com.
