Mobile mammography trailer heading to Valleyview and Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation

Alberta Health Services’ mobile mammography unit will be parked in Valleyview and Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation at the start of November, as part of AHS’ Screen Test program.

The unit will be located at the Valleyview Medical Clinic (2812B East Highway Street) on October 30 and November 1-4, providing breast cancer screening tests for women aged 50-74, the age group which is most at risk of developing breast cancer.

It will then move to Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Health Centre on November 5.

“A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast and has proven to be the most effective way to detect breast cancer,” reads a release from AHS. “Early detection allows for a greater number of options for treatment and a better chance of survival.”

AHS says additional screening services will also be provided during this time, as part of a partnership between AHS Screening Programs and Screen Test.

Cervical and Colorectal cancer screening will be available at the Valleyview Medical Clinic on November 2, 3, as well as Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation Health Centre on November 5, where a female nurse practitioner will provide the screening.

According to AHS’ updated 2021 schedule for its mobile mammography unit, it will be in the following Peace Country locations later this year:

• Hythe: October 6-8
• Grande Cache: October 12-16
• Spirit River: October 18-27
• Silver Valley: October 28 & 29
• Valleyview: October 30: November 4
• Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation: November 5
• McLennan: November 6-10
• Fox Creek: November 12-15
• Sucker Creek First Nation: November 16 & 17
• High Prairie: November 20-December 1

AHS says the aim of the mobile screening program is to improve access to cancer screening for women in northern Alberta communities where mammography is not readily available.
