State of emergency helps Red Deer homeless shelter keep doors open

Oct 15, 2021 | 7:04 AM

RED DEER, Alta. – Workers at an emergency shelter in a central Alberta city say they were overwhelmed with relief when a state of local emergency was renewed in response to rising COVID-19 cases.

It meant they wouldn’t be evicted from their temporary shelter in Red Deer at the end of September, forcing dozens of people experiencing homelessness back on the streets.

But it’s only a 60-day extension and Safe Harbour Society fears their clients will be forced into the cold next month.

The temporary shelter opened last March because of the pandemic and houses about 60 people each night.

It is across the street from the society’s main building, which is not at risk of closure but doesn’t have much overnight capacity.

Red Deer city council voted earlier this year to shutter the temporary site after businesses and residents voiced concerns about crime and loitering downtown.

A spokeswoman with the City of Red Deer says they are working with community organizations, social agencies, the province and other stakeholders to find a permanent solution.
