New children’s book by Grande Prairie authors carries message of courage

Oct 17, 2021 | 7:00 AM

Seeing strange animal manure while walking the dog is not the usual inspiration for a children’s book, but that is the case for a pair of Grande Prairie authors.

The newest work by Rew and Sarah Jones and their family is called Afraid but Brave – A Simeon Sasquatch Tale.

Rew Jones explains how Sarah’s discovery led to this work.

“She got thinking about what could be living in these woods. And that just got her thinking about all the legends of sasquatch and bigfoot and what-not. So, she came up with the idea of why wouldn’t we see these things if they occur and maybe they’re scared or maybe they’re nervous.”

“From there, we built the story of this very timid sasquatch.”

Rew says there is a message in the book for children.

“I’ve always talked to my kids about how it’s only actually when we’re scared that we can choose to be brave. If we’re just doing something we’re not worried about, it doesn’t require bravery. But when we’re scared is when we have the chance to choose courage and so it carries that message.”

Jones says this was a family project with him and Sarah doing the writing and their six kids giving feedback on what they came up with.

“We read them to our kids and see what’s working, what’s not working and chat with them about all the options.”

The book is being sold in digital and regular form on the Kickstarter website.

Jones says more copies will be printed if they reach their fundraising goal. They hope to collect $4,500 by November 21.

Since the campaign launched October 9, more than $3,000 has been raised and the project has gained more than 70 backers.
