Grande Prairie voters reject permanent Daylight Savings Time, favour equalization removal

Grande Prairie voters have balked at the idea of staying on Mountain Daylight Time year-round, but they are in favour of removing the practice of equalization from the constitution.

As the unofficial results have been tabulated on the two referendum questions posed by the provincial government during the municipal elections, 56 per cent of voters in Grande Prairie said they were not in favour of remaining on Daylight Saving Time on a permanent basis.

A total of 9,409 ballots were counted on the time change referendum, with 5,269 voters against the idea and 4,140 in favour.

As for the referendum on equalization, 70 per cent of Grande Prairie voters were in favour of removing the practice of equalization. A total of 9,186 ballots were cast on the question, with 6,382 voting in favour of removal and 2,804 against.

However, it remains to be seen what the final outcome of the referendums will be, as Elections Alberta will publish the official provincial results at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26.

Senate nominee results will also not become official until that time. However, unofficial results show Grande Prairie voters favoured Pam Davidson (3,880 votes), Erika Barootes (3,789 votes) and Myhailo Martyniouk (2,676 votes) as their top three choices.

The provincial government will determine next steps once official results on the two referendum questions and Senate nominee elections are available.
