Key COVID-19 metrics falling province-wide, but vigilance still needed: Kenney

Oct 20, 2021 | 7:20 AM

EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says COVID-19 numbers are falling and hospital pressures are easing, but people must remain vigilant against the virus.

He says 75 per cent of intensive care beds are now occupied with COVID-19 patients, which is down from 97 per cent just over six weeks ago.

However, that’s still more than at the peak of any other wave of the pandemic.

Kenney says it will take many more weeks for numbers to decline significantly.

The province also reported 531 new infections today and 12 additional deaths.

There are more than 11,000 active cases in Alberta.

Dr. Verna Yiu, the head of Alberta Health Services, says the province has not yet seen the full impact of transmission at Thanksgiving.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical health officer, announced new measures for continuing care facilities, which start on Monday.

All visitors must wear masks indoors, even in residents’ rooms.

And incoming residents must also quarantine until they have a negative COVID-19 test.

Hinshaw says she recommends unvaccinated people not visit care homes.
