New mayors of Edmonton & Calgary, Kenney prepared to work together

Edmonton’s next mayor says his goal with Premier Jason Kenney will be to keep it respectful and get things done.

Amarjeet Sohi says he’s worked with Kenney before when Sohi was a cabinet minister in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government.

And he says his goal is to disagree on policy if necessary but always be respectful.

Sohi is one of two new big-city mayors in Alberta after Monday’s municipal elections.

Jyoti Gondek was elected the first female mayor of Calgary.

Gondek says her goal is also to build a strong relationship with the provincial government.

Kenney’s government occasionally crossed swords with former mayors Don Iveson of Edmonton and Naheed Nenshi in Calgary.

The mayors criticized Kenney for what they termed failure to lead on the COVID-19 crisis and for cutting funding to municipalities.

Kenney says he’s ready to work with anyone to solve issues facing the province.
