Crokicurl rink set to open in Sexsmith this winter

Residents in Sexsmith can expect to have access to a new outdoor activity this winter.

Mayor Kate Potter says this new outdoor activity is crokicurl, which is being installed next to the big outdoor rink in Sexsmith.

“We spend a lot of time in winter here in Sexsmith and the north, so we wanted to make sure that we had equal numbers of winter activities to encourage people to get out to really celebrate the fact that you can spend time outside if you are dress appropriately,” Potter explained.

She says the location of the crokicurl rink works perfectly for both families and friends to come together.

“It’s sort of near our main crossing for a lot of our school kids, so they spend hours upon hours there after school. It’s also lit up, which is fantastic too, so we can use it in the evening,” Potter said.

“And this is right beside another rink, so it worked so well that way as far as being able to for the upkeep of it and it’s a fun, family-friendly activity for all ages.”

Potter says the Wellness Coalition will lend the gear for crokicurl, making it easy for anyone to try out.

“It’s actually milk jugs with colored water frozen inside, basically colored dice, and you use those as curling stones or curling rocks.”

The Wellness Coalition, as Potter describes, works to provide barrier-free and affordable outdoor recreational activities for community members.

She says residents can also borrow from the coalition’s lending closet, which she hopes will allow everyone to enjoy the winters in Sexsmith.

“We have snowshoes, and in the past we’ve done some with cross country skiing, or partnered with one of our schools on that. There are lots of different things people can use in the community.”

Potter says there is the Coats for Kids fundraiser, as well as FCSS which can help provide winter clothes, ensuring anyone can participate in the winter activities such as crokicurl.
