Shell to partially power Edmonton area refinery using solar farm by 2023

Nov 9, 2021 | 7:27 AM

CALGARY – Shell Canada says its Scotford refinery near Edmonton will soon be partially powered by solar energy.

U.S.-based renewable energy company Silicon Ranch, which is partially owned by Royal Dutch Shell plc, will build and operate a solar farm near the Scotford site.

Shell Canada will purchase power from the solar farm. The solar farm is expected to produce enough renewable electricity to provide 20 per cent of the refinery’s annual energy needs.

Construction will begin next year and the solar farm is expected to begin providing electricity to the refinery by the end of 2023.
