Remembrance Day ceremonies set in Grande Prairie

Nov 10, 2021 | 4:20 PM

A couple of ceremonies are planned for November 11 in Grande Prairie to honour our veterans this Remembrance Day.

An outdoor ceremony, organized by the Army and Navy Air Force Veterans, will be held at the cenotaph in Jubilee Park at 10:45 a.m.

That event will happen alongside the Royal Canadian Legion’s ceremony, which will be held at the downtown arena. Doors will open at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday with the ceremony beginning at 10:45.

Head of Ceremonies for the Legion Joanne Wood says this year’s wreath-laying ceremony will look a little different.

“People won’t actually be laying wreaths. They’ll all be pre-laid, but there will still be a full service.”

At the Legion’s indoor ceremony, there will be a moment of silence at 11 a.m. a wreath-laying ceremony, and a non-denominational service to pay respect for those who have lost their lives.

Wood suggests the ceremony is to recognize all veterans, including the Afghan veterans, RCMP, and some first responders who are also considered veterans.

“A lot of people when they hear the word veteran, they tend to think of the world wars and what a lot of people aren’t recognizing is the fact that we actually have a lot of veterans that are more in the 30 to 40 range in age.”

Due to the Restrictions Exemption Program for the indoor event, anyone 12 or older will need to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19, a recent negative test result, or proof of a medical exemption. Masks are mandatory inside the arena.

The service will also be live-streamed on the Legion’s Facebook page. There will be a lunch, bursary presentations and other things at the Legion Hall starting at 1 p.m. Thursday.
