Try-It Day returning to Grande Prairie area January 15

Dec 14, 2021 | 1:16 PM

The Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connections annual Try-It Day is returning January 15.

Try-It Day occurs once in the summer and winter every year. The goal of the day is for youth aged 6-17 to have a free opportunity to try out a new sport they could be interested in pursuing.

“We have upwards of 90 different sports played in the region,” said Karna Germsheid, the Executive Director for the Grande Prairie Regional Sport Connection.

“Sometimes, people don’t recognize that. This is a really great day to celebrate that and have your kid get introduced into a new sport in a non-intimidating type of way and a non-committal type of way.”

Germsheid says so far, they have had 25 different sporting organizations approach them and show their interest in being a part of Try-It Day.

She adds while they promote the sports as much as they can, it is the organizations that do all of the work in teaching the youth how to play the sport.

“Those participants end up going to those established sports organizations, and what they do is what they do best, and that is offer their sport programming and teaching (the youth) what their sport is all about,” she explained.

Boxing, gymnastics, lacrosse and skateboarding are just some of the sports youth can try out on Try-It Day.

In previous years, there have been over 600 people who have signed up to take part in Try-It Day.

“We are always limited to the amount we can take because there is going to be a limit for each session,” Germsheid stated.

Registration for the event opens on January 3 and the event takes place from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on January 15.
